
Opening Weekend Wrap: Great Tier 2 Action in Pennsylvania & Massachusetts
The 2025-26 youth hockey season formally got underway the weekend of Aug. 15-17 with a pair of high-end Tier 2 showcases on the East Coast.
As of that weekend, results of sanctioned games in the United States can count toward a team’s rating on MYHockeyRankings.com. MHR’s first set of weekly rankings for the 2025-26 campaign will be released in late September.
The first weekend of the new campaign featured one of the season’s top boys Tier 2 showcases in Pennsylvania as the Mid-Atlantic Showcase Series kicked off its year with the Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase, Meanwhile, a little farther north in Massachusetts, the East Coast Wizards hosted their annual girls Tier 2 August Showcase.
The two events included some of the nation’s top Tier 2 boys and girls programs, with a total of 115 teams competing.
Held at four suburban Philadelphia rinks, the Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase boasted 89 teams competing at the 10U through 18U age levels. The event started Friday, Aug. 15, and concluded with championship and consolation games Sunday, Aug. 17.

The 89 USA Tier 2 boys teams competed in 21 divisions across six age groups. There were A and AA divisions, with teams traveling from as far away as Western New York to the north and North Carolina to the south.

Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 12U AA
The RR Hockey Academy Reapers from New Jersey captured the 12U AA championship with a 3-2 victory against the Plattsburgh Jr. Cardinals. Three different players scored for RRHA in the title clash as the Reapers concluded the tournament with a 4-0-0 record, outscoring their opponents, 24-5.
Plattsburgh went 2-1-1 on the weekend. Team Philadelphia was third in the standings at 2-2-0.
Asher Bridges of the Central Penn Panthers tied for the scoring lead among all 12U AA players with 5 goals and 2 assists. He was tied in points with the Reapers’ Luke Doyle (6-1-7) and JT Terantino (6-1-7) as well as Blake Frechette (6-1-7) of Plattsburgh.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 13U AA
Genesis Hockey Club got a pair of goals from Austin Fisher to capture the 13U AA championship game, 3-2, against the Philadelphia Blazers. Genesis posted a 3-0-1 record and outscored its opponents, 19-6, in capturing the title, while the Blazers went 2-1-1. The Wissahickon Warriors were third at 2-2-0.
Fisher led all 13U AA scorers with 8 goals and 4 assists for 12 points in 4 contests. Daniel Jones of Wissahickon had 6-3-9 in 4 games to finish second in the scoring race, with Jackson Horton of Genesis and Ryan Mart of the Blazers each recording 8 points.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 14U AA
Four different players scored for the Reston Raiders as they knocked off the Valley Forge Colonials, 4-2, in the finals to capture the 14U AA championship.
Reston placed first in the Hart Division and outscored its opponents, 22-8, in going 4-1-0. Valley Forge finished the weekend 3-2-0 and placed second in the Calder Division behind the Mid-State Mustangs (3-1-0) but knocked off Hollydell, 5-2, in the semifinals.
August Scott of Reston led the 14U AA scoring parade with 6 goals, 4 assists and 10 points. RJ Billetdeaux of Mid-State recorded 5-2-7, teammate Bailey Downey had 4-3-7 and Jonathan Tokar of the New Jersey Jets posted 4-3-7.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 16U AA North
Logan Josko scored twice, including the overtime game-winning goal, in the 16U AA North championship game to lift the Woodbridge Wolfpack to the title, 3-2, against Team Philadelphia. Josko finished the weekend third overall in 16U AA scoring with 6 goals and 3 assists for 9 points. Woodbridge was the top team in the Norris Division at 5-1-0 and outscored its opponents, 24-10.
Team Philadelphia also posted a 5-1-0 record, the top mark in the Calder Division, while Genesis Hockey Club paced the Hart Division at 3-1-1.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 16U AA South
Team Philadelphia outlasted the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, 3-2, in overtime to capture the 16U AA South championship as Nolan Hirshka buried a pair of goals and won the game with his overtime tally. Philadelphia finished the tournament 5-0-0, the top mark in the Norris Division, and outscored its opponents, 23-10.
Lehigh Valley went 4-1-0 to pace the Hart Division, while Genesis Hockey Club was the top team in the Calder Division at 2-1-1.
Shane Grubbs of Lehigh Valley led all 16U AA scorers with 7 goals and 5 assists for 12 points, while Carter Scott of the Reston Raiders had 5-6-11.
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 18U AA North
Jase Zangara scored twice in the championship game as the New Jersey Jets beat Rochester Coalition, 4-3, to finish 6-0-0 and earn the 18U AA North title. The Jets earned the top seed out of the Norris Division and outscored their opponents, 33-9.
Rochester finished the weekend at 5-1-0, the top mark in the Hart Division, while the Montclair Blues were the top Selke Division team at 4-1-0 and the Wilmington Nighthawks paced the Calder Division at 2-2-0.
Zangara led all 18U AA scorers with 10 goals, 6 assists and 16 points. Rochester’s Cameron Stewart was next with 8-5-13, followed by New Jersey’s Jake McCloud (6-6-12) and Team Philadelphia’s Lucas Mott (6-5-11).
Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase 18U AA South
Mick Tronoski scored a pair of third-period goals as the Valley Forge Colonials overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Snider Hockey, 4-3, for the 18U AA South championship. Valley Forge, the Seacoast Spartans and Snider Hockey each finished the weekend 3-1-0. Despite falling in the title game, Snider outscored its opponents, 22-5.
Snider’s Malakye Johnson led all 18U AA South scorers with 3 goals, 4 assists and 7 points, followed by Teddy Farhnam of Seacoast and Snider teammate Chimaobim Odenigbo, each of whom tallied 6 points.
East Coast Wizards August Tier 2 Showcase
The Wizards August Tier 2 Showcase featured 26 teams in the 16U and 19U age groups playing at Edge Sports Center in Bedford, Mass. It began Thursday, Aug. 14, and ran through Sunday, Aug. 17. A smaller event but equally strong, the showcase featured a dozen 16U girls teams, with 14 teams competing at the 19U level.

Both age groups included many traditional national USA Girls powerhouse programs. In addition to the host East Coast Wizards, who often send both Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams to USA Hockey Nationals, other programs that are frequent Nationals participants or produce highly ranked teams such as Assabet Valley, the Boston Jr. Eagles, Massachusetts Spitfires, Steel City Selects and Bay State Breakers competed
Wizards Summer Tier 2 Showcase 16U
East Coast Wizards U16 Major 2 was the lone 16U team to post a 4-0-0 record for the weekend. The Wizards outscored their opponents, 12-5, in earning victories against three traditional powers – Assabet Valley, the Steel City Selects and the Boston Jr. Eagles – by a total of just five goals.
Assabet finished the weekend 2-2-0, while the Jr. Eagles and Selects each went 3-1-0. The North Suburban Wings outscored their opponents, 6-0, to finish 3-0-1, and the Shoreline Sharks also posted a strong 3-1-0 mark.
Wizards Summer Tier 2 Showcase 19U
The Wizards 19U Major 2 squad also put together a perfect 4-0-0 weekend and outscored its foes by an impressive 22-1 margin. That mark included 3-1 and 4-0 victories vs. traditionally strong Steel City Selects and Massachusetts Spitfires teams.
The Selects went 2-1-1 at the showcase, outscoring their opponents by a 10-4 margin, while the Spitfires were 1-3-0.
Another traditional powerhouse program, the Boston Jr. Eagles, posted a 3-0-1 record while compiling an 11-4 goal differential. The Jr. Eagles skated to a scoreless tie with the Shoreline Sharks, who were 2-1-1 for the weekend.
Meanwhile, the New England Wildcats were 3-1-0 with an 18-5 goal differential, and the Rhode Island Sting went 3-1-0 with a 9-4 scoring margin. The Sting’s only loss was a 1-0 decision vs. the Wings, while the Wildcats beat Assabet Valley, 3-0, and the Spitfires, 4-2, before falling to Steel City, 3-1.
