North York Storm U15 Trio Earns Play of the Year Honors

It seems like any play of the year contest in any sport usually is dominated by amazing individual efforts. Our 2024-25 MYHockey Rankings Play of the Year bracket was no different, but when all the votes were tabulated, it was a picture-perfect team play that earned the honors.

Paige Fox, Teagan Gloyns and Nancy Wang teamed up on a beautiful tic-tac-toe power-play goal with time winding down on the clock to earn recognition as the 2024-25 MHR Play of the Year. The North York Storm U15 trio defeated a pretty goal by Owen Elgbacka of Guelph Gryphons U15; Owen carried the puck from near his team's blue line, split the defense, hopped over a defender’s stick and roofed a backhand.

Congratulations to both the winners and the finalist.

Perhaps the best part of the North York Storm trio’s run to the title was that every round was a team effort as their play generated the most overall votes per round in the entire bracket. They earned 60, 67, 62, 54 and 54 percent of the vote, respectively, in each round, and they generated an average of nearly 360 votes for each of their matchups.

Nearly 600 votes were recorded in both their semifinal and championship victories, The entire contest produced about 7,000 votes, an average of better than 215 per contest, and hundreds of thousands of views and interactions were generated during the eight-week competition.

It took nearly two months, but the public has spoken, and a champion has been determined from the original field of 32 plays.

Videos of all 32 plays and all the matchups were posted on the MHR Twitter/X and Facebook pages, but voting only took place on the MHR Instagram story. There were well over 500,000 views and interactions generated by the posts related to the Play of the Year Contest during its first six weeks alone.

The third MYHockey Rankings Play of the Year Contest included players who executed amazing plays that either were submitted or uncovered throughout the 2024-25 season in competition to see which one would come out on top. Play of the Year first-round voting began Monday, June 16, and ran through July 10. Round 2 voting concluded July 25. The full contest concluded with championship voting Aug. 12 and 13, just a few days before MHR begins accepting scores for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
