It's Time to Start Submitting Videos for Play of the Week Consideration

Last week, we released our first rankings for the 2025-26 season, so you know what that means. Now it’s time to get started with our weekly Play of the Week voting!

For the past two years we’ve received enough weekly video submissions to honor a Play of the Week for just about every week of the season, starting the week after our first rankings are released and continuing all the way through USA Hockey National Championships in April. That also has provided us with enough clips to hold a Play of the Year contest starting in June and running through early August.

That is the plan again this year.

Although we rank more than 20,000 amateur North American hockey teams annually, we rely on our members, volunteers, coaches, team managers, league contacts and other interested parties to enter the data necessary to keep our rankings up to date. Likewise, although we see a lot of great games, players and performances every season, there is no way for our small staff to compile the video library necessary to select a representative Play of the Week throughout an entire season.

So, once again we are asking and inviting you to help us honor top plays that occur during the 2025-26 season by submitting Play of the Week nominees. We will hold our first Play of the Week Instagram vote as soon as we have enough quality submissions to give voters three solid options from which to choose. After that, the plan is to hold a vote each week through Nationals with the possible exception of the last week of December.

Any standout goals, assists, saves, displays of teamwork or defensive efforts are eligible to be submitted and considered. We will not consider violent or open-ice checks, nor will we consider “Michigan goals.” We get so many “Michigan” submissions – and they generally are very similar – that it’s impossible to differentiate which ones stand out more than others.

Also, please don’t submit plays from the same player repeatedly, especially once a player has advanced to the final weekly voting. We will not include any winners or finalists more than once during a given season. Our goal is to honor as many different players from as many different teams, age groups and levels as possible.

All Play of the Week submissions MUST follow the guidelines outlined below or they WILL NOT be considered:

  • Include the player or players’ names, the team name and the age group or birthyear.
  • Please DO NOT send links to social media posts or videos that are posted online unless the link is to an actual downloadable file.
  • Keeping the natural rink sound on the video is fine, but please DO NOT add music or other special effects such as slow motion, inserted graphics, logos, etc.
  • If you pull the clip from a service such as LiveBarn and their logo is on the video somewhere, that is acceptable. We will do any necessary modifications to the video during our editing process.
  • If someone needs to be credited for the video, please include that information.
  • Feel free to send more than one angle of the nominated play in one or two video files if that provides a better view.
  • Make sure that the video isn’t so small that it becomes blurry or grainy when blown up, and also please make sure the video is oriented properly (that means not upside down).

Please understand that because of the volume of emails we receive, it is not possible for us to reply to the entries that are submitted. There also is no way that we can search for plays that are posted on the internet or pull video of plays that are submitted via social-media direct messages, especially if the information we need is not provided.

The only way to be considered is if the video file or files are emailed and the guidelines above are followed.
