The MHR Weekend Wrap for Jan. 10-12: Back in the Swing of Things

The weekend of Jan. 10-12 featured a pair of high-end Tier 1 Girls showcases, one in Ontario and one in Massachusetts, as well as high-profile Tier 1 Boys events in the Cleveland, Ohio, and Rochester, N.Y., areas.

 

Ottawa Lady Senators U15 & U18 Winter Showcase

The Ottawa Lady Senators U15 AA and U18 AA teams hosted the 19th Annual Lady Senators Winter Showcase Tournament Jan. 10-12 at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, Ontario. Ottawa’s U18 team was No. 39 in Canada, and the U15 team was No. 17, according to the Week 16 MHR Canada Girls Tier 1 Rankings.

All teams played at least four games, with champions and runners up playing six. There were four pool-play games to determine playoff seedings followed by quarterfinals, semifinals and championship games for both age divisions. Games began on the morning of Friday, Jan. 10, and ran through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12.

The U15 Division had 12 teams and featured the Durham West Lightning, the top-ranked team in Canada, as well as two other top ten teams and eight teams that were ranked among the nation’s top 30.

There were 20 U18 teams at the tournament, including the Amherst Lady Knights, the seventh-ranked United States 19U Tier 2 team, Ontario’s top-ranked Oakville Hornets, the No. 15 team in Canada, were part of a deep U18 field that included 10 of the Canada’s top 50 teams.

North American Hockey Academy Winter Classic Showcase

The North American Hockey Academy, traditionally one of the top USA Girls Tier 1 programs, hosted its annual 19U & 16U Winter Classic Showcase Jan. 10-12 in Massachusetts.

In addition to the host 16U and 19U NAHA White and Red teams, ranked 21st and fifth in the U.S., respectively, 10 other teams from both the United States and Canada participated. NAHA’s 19U Navy team, ranked 79th overall in the U.S., also was part of the showcase field.

Included among the participating teams from the United States were 11th-ranked Philadelphia Jr. Flyers 19U, and Winchendon School sent its 19U prep team along with its 16U team, which was No. 10 in the USA Independent Girls Prep Rankings. The Minnesota Ice Cougars and Connecticut Jr. Rangers also sent their 19U teams, while the Jr. Flyers 18th-ranked 16U team attended as well.

Joining the American sides at the showcase were the U22 and U18 teams from Bourget College in Quebec. Bourget had Canada’s 26th-ranked U22 side, and it’s U18 team was No. 6 in the Canada Independent Girls Prep Rankings.

In addition, there were a pair of 14U matchups between the NAHA Jr. Hawks and the Boston Hockey Group Ice Hawks Jan. 12 at 2:50 and 5:50 p.m. EST.

Games began Friday, Jan. 10, and ran through Sunday, Jan. 12, at Canton Ice House in Massachusetts. All games should be available for viewing on-demand via LiveBarn.

The No. 18 Jr. Flyers finished atop the 16U Division standings with a 3-0-0 record and a 12-8 scoring differential. NAHA’s fifth-ranked 19U White finished the weekend as the only unbeaten 19U team, posting a 3-0-0 record while outscoring its opponents, 18-5.

Eloise Downes and Samantha Kaczorowski each scored twice for Philadelphia, while Rachel Steward potted the other goal and Ella Rajnys earned another win in goal.

Ashlee Marsala, Amanda Sanchez-Rosen, Haley Hasbargen and Isabelle Li each scored once for Winchendon, and Sinead Beanlands recorded the shutout win in goal.

 

 

Cleveland Barons 216 Showcase Series

The Cleveland Barons hosted one of their 216 Showcase Series events Jan. 10-12 at Barons Bus Arena in Cleveland and Brunswick Auto Mart Arena in Strongsville, Ohio. Both venues have LiveBarn feeds, so all tournament games should be available for on-demand viewing.

The Jan. 10-12 event featured 13 USA Boys Tier 1 teams competing in the 13O and 11U age groups. There were eight 11U teams and five 13O teams. One of the 13O teams, the Lake County Vipers, is part of a very strong Tier 2 organization that competes in the Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL), which always features many highly ranked programs and arguably is the top Tier 2 circuit in the United States.

While the 13O Division had a solid field, the eight-team 11U Division was stacked, with every team ranked among the nation’s top 22, according to the Week 16 MHR Rankings. The field included four of the top five USA Boys 11U teams and five that were ranked among the top 10.

Games began early on the morning, Friday, Jan. 10. Teams played four or five games, depending on the age group, between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon.

Cameron Coombe, Anthony Wickersham and Parker Miller scored third-period goals as LC rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the lead, but Kellen Cicerchia scored on the buzzer for Mid-Fairfield to forge a tie. Maddox Hylton and Timm Mullen also scored for the Rangers.

LC’s Cameron Coombe finished off his hat trick by scoring the game-winning goal with 12:22 left in the game. Luke Merdinian scored the other Little Caesars goal, and Channing Burrow stopped 13 shots to pick up the win in goal.

 

 

Northeast Pack Rochester Showcase Weekend

The 14U, 15O, 16U and 18 teams from one of the top USA Boys Tier 1 leagues assembled in Rochester, N.Y. for a Northeast Pack Showcase Weekend Jan. 10-12. Play got underway Friday, Jan. 10, and ran through Sunday, Jan. 12, at Rochester Ice Center and Rochester Institute of Technology.

For this regular-season weekend, the teams of the NE Pack welcomed guest-participant Little Caesars, another prominent United States youth hockey organization. NE Pack member clubs participating in Rochester included the Bishop Kearney Selects, Long Island Gulls, New Jersey Rockets, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, Mid-Fairfield Rangers and Mount St. Charles Academy.

The Northeast Pack Hockey League is made up of six youth hockey organizations from the United States Northeast. It was founded prior to the 2019-2020 season and features six like-minded organizations with a track record of success on a national scale. The clubs share a vision for player-focused, and the member organizations have advanced numerous players to the United States Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, Canadian Jr. A Hockey, the North American Hockey League, the NCAA and professional hockey.

The league season consists of six weekend showcase events held in the Northeast that are spaced throughout the season, culminating with the playoffs in New York at the Utica University Nexus Center in February.
